If malnutrition goes untreated the consequences can include:
• Poor immune response and increased risk of infection
• Reduced muscle strength
• Impaired wound healing
• Impaired psycho-social function, including poor cognition and increased dependency
• Delayed/slower recovery from illness and surgery
• Poorer health outcomes
• Reduced quality of life
As we get older our requirement of nutrition largely stays the same yet food energy intake can fall by up to 25% from age 40-80.
